Google TV – future is here

What is Google TV?

As with any exciting new technology, it isn’t always clear what it actually does. The goal of Google TV is to turn television and web into a seamless experience, giving you access to online content and videos from the comfort of your living room.

Google puts it this way: the traditional way to watch a television show is to wait for it to air on a network, meaning you change your schedule to match that of the show you want to watch.  The internet breaks that barrier, allowing you to watch shows whenever you feel like through outlets like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube.

With Google TV, you can watch online content out of the confined space of your computer’s monitor and instead play it on your TV – together with standard TV content.

Getting Google TV

Google is working with companies like Sony and LG to integrate Google TV into televisions and BluRay players which will be available exclusively through Best Buy.  If you alredy have a TV or BluRay player, you can instead purchase an external Google TV box that will connect to your TV via an HDMI connection.  The great news: the Google TV service will be offered completely free (minus the cost of hardware).

Future plans have also been announced that Google TV will integrate with video game consoles, like Netflix has done.

Searching and Browsing

Google TV will include a powerful search engine (of course) so you can easily find the shows you’re looking for without browsing through lists and guides. When you find a show you want to watch or subscribe to, you can quickly add it to your home screen which makes it just like a traditional TV channel. Google TV merges content from sources like Netflix, YouTube, sports websites, and many other sources along with your traditional television content, so everything is available in one central location.

A full version of Google’s Chrome browser will also be included with Google TV, so you can browse the internet just like you would on your computer. You’ll also have access to your photos and web applications like Pandora.

Apps

This is exciting news for Android fans: Google TV will include the Android Market so you can download and install Android apps right to your television. Beyond that, you can use your Android phone as the remote control for your TV, including voice search.

Popular Android applications like Google Listen will be updated to provide many more features for Google TV. The best part about including the Android Market is that new features will constantly be added to your TV, as we’ve seen with Android phones.

Google TV itself is based on Android 2.1 and Google Chrome software. Google has stated that the Google TV software will become fully open-source in 2011.

Multitasking

Multitasking is a big deal for most people, and Google TV will not disappoint. With this software, you’ll be able to watch a TV show in the corner of your screen while browsing the internet with Chrome. Google TV will also be able to interact with hardware you already own like a DVR to schedule recording of TV shows while you continue to watch TV as usual.

Automatic Subtitles (with translations)

Using Google’s tremendous translation and voice transcription resources, Google TV will be able to automatically generate subtitles for content and even translate those subtitles to your native language (as long as Google supports the language).

Availability

Google TV is stated to be released to customers in the United States this fall, and international expansion will take place throughout 2011. The Android Market for Google TV will also launch in 2011.

Sites like Hulu are cool in that they give you access to watch TV shows online – such as recent episodes of your favorite shows. This is great way to catch up on episodes you missed on TV, or even to watch TV shows online on your own time without having to purchase or build a DVR.But some TV shows are available online to a much greater extent than a few recent episodes. A few shows have opted to put the entirety of their catalog onto the web for all to see, for free.

Sadly some of these only work in the United States, but that’s nothing you can’t get around with a good proxy.

Star Trek: The Original Series

watch TV shows online

This show really needs no introduction. What started as a quirky 1960s TV show would become a worldwide phenomenon, including 5 different TV series, a dozen movies (if you include the upcoming sequel to the original remake) and countless books. Of all these movies and shows, however, it’s the original series that’s found a good home online.

CBS is hosting all of Star Trek at its website as well as at YouTube. .

The Twilight Zone

watch TV shows online

No, this one’s not about whining teenage vampires. It is, in fact, some of the most influential TV science fiction in history. It’s also online, care of CBS.

The Twilight Zone isn’t a TV show in the traditional sense: there’s no consistent characters from episode to episode, nor is there a wider story arc. Rather, this show gives its viewers a complete story focused on the surreal. I really can’t explain better than that, so you might as well check this show out at CBS.

While you’re there, check out the other TV classics as well.

South Park

where can i watch tv shows online

It makes sense that South Park would end up online in its entirety, because in many ways South Park was the first viral video. Commissioned to make a video Christmas card for Brian Graden (then an executive at Fox), animators Matt Stone and Trey Parker made a short video that was quickly passed from person to person via old-fashioned video tape. The short eventually made it’s way online, and spread quite far despite the limited bandwidth at the time. Since then every South Park episode’s been widely available online via pirated streaming sites, so the South Park team figured they may as well put every episode online legally.

Today you can watch the 200 episodes of South Park at SouthParkStudios. Even better, South Park Studios is working out deals with a number of international partners, so you might even be able to watch this in your country without using a proxy.

Honourable Mention: Firefly

When Hulu launched it hosted the entirety of Firefly, the single greatest science fiction show in history. It is to gritty, dystopian science fiction what Star Trek is to the hopeful, utopian side of the genre, and it achieves this by borrowing a great deal from American history in general and the settling of the west in particular. Sadly the show was cancelled before its first season ended, but fan loyalty was so fierce that a movie featuring the characters came out just a few years later.

You can’t get every episode of Firefly on Hulu anymore, however; now they rotate episodes there instead. To me, this feels like Fox cancelling Firefly on me all over again. This is salt on opened wound, because it’s almost been 10 years and I still think I’ll never forgive Fox for cancelling Firefly.

Watching Live TV online

Althrough in more and more households online TV is more and more used for watching live TV online, it is still way behind cable TV. But as it started, this will soon change. So, what are the possibilities of watching TV on Internet ?` Beside downloads from torrent and other p2p programs, there is plenty online services which offer online TV streaming service for free.. So, people are using them to watch their favourite TV shows, sport matches from other side of the world, 24/7 porn, etc… Of course that on free service sites there are no blockbusters and newest shows, but then again, all you have to do is wait for a day and it will be available somewhere online. OR you can just bought Online TV software which will give you the possibility to watch live TV online from all over the world, or what you want, when you want. For a cable companies, TV and movie industry this scenario is an absollute nightmare. It kills all their implemented distibution models of new shows, series, or news. To be honest, I don`t mind that, at least it will make them to go online and show us what they have to offer – I presume that it will be lawsuit, but we will see that in the near future.

Basics. There are several medium formats for streaming online TV videos. Beside wmv (Windows Media Video), and.rm (Real Player) there si also flashvideo (.fla), which is mostly used on sites as YouTube and Google Video. Do not think that this are only one, cause new formats are thrown almost monthly. Watching TV on Internet is nothing new. It is perfectly normal step in evolution of Internet where we came from static web pages, over basic multimedia towards full blown web 2.0 or web 3.0 websites. One thing that I would always recommend is buying some software which will give you pleasure in terminating your cable TV subscription. Take a look, you won`t be sorry. Here are some video streaming services to get you going…

Now that the fall TV season is starting to get closer back, Mad Men and Wipeout fans aren’t the only ones able to watch new episodes of their favorite shows. But while you were out enjoying the summer, arrangements between networks and distributors were renegotiated, web site navigations changed and new shows came on the air, so finding what you want to watch online may be a bit of a challenge. But there are some emerging TV aggregators that can help bring all your programming together into one place. As a dedicated online TV watcher, I’ve spent week trying out these various services, and I have some tips.

CastTV: I find CastTV’s guide, whose calendar shows exactly when free episodes from a certain day’s programming are posted online, the most intuitive to use. If I want to watch live TV online or maybe last night’s episode of FlashForward, for example, I can see at a glance if it’s already posted on Hulu ( To be sure, CastTV does index unauthorized uploads, so those who find such a practice offensive might want to go elsewhere. But I appreciate that the index is that much more complete. (However, it also might be worth mentioning that TV Guide has in the past been known to get litigious with those who try to use a grid to display programming.) CastTV raised $3.1 million in 2007.

Clicker: This brand-new site wants to be “the ultimate programming guide for watching live online TV.” (It also quotes NewTeeVee in its introductory blog post, so that’s got to count for something!) CEO Jim Lanzone says the model, “surf not search,” is based on the belief that most of the time users want something to watch, they just don’t know what. “It’s part directory, part search engine, part entertainment guide, part wiki, part DVR,” he said. And the site includes online originals along with TV reruns, a big plus. Clicker isn’t open to the public yet, but if you’d like to try it out, sign up as Lanzone promises you’ll get an invite within about a day. The company, which is composed of the former Ask.com search team and members of a similar startup it recently acquired, Modern Feed (our profile), has $8 million in funding from Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures, so I’m hoping it’ll be the one with the firepower to unite its listings and on-demand experience across all the places I want to use and watch TV on Internet.

SlashControl: AOL’s new dedicated online TV and movie streaming site has a good index of shows and a wide selection drawn from all the big outlets . The site does a good job of telling you exactly what’s available from each show — how many episodes, how many clips — wherever you see it searched or indexed.  One thing that’s pretty cool about most every video TV online aggregator these days is that they use embedded versions of shows, so you can watch live tv online where you’re browsing. In the past there was a whole lot more clicking through required to view the actual videos on someone else’s site. So TV fans, you have some good options out there, and the programming looks better than ever, with many outlets employing adaptive bitrate streaming and offering HD episodes. Though now that so many shows are hosted in multiple locations, one feature I’d like to see these sites add is a rating that makes clear which host has the highest resolution version of each show. If there’s High Definition available somewhere, I`ll be there first…and if you still aren`t watching live TV online, START now.

Hi everyone,

Let me ask you a thing ! What is so awesome about TV ?

I can bet that each of you will give me a different answer, but all of you will agree about one thing – we are used on it. It is our boredness go away zone. Most of us grew up with it, and like it or not, for the most part, we do not know any better. Not that we are not trying, we continuously enhance broadcast TV with additional services, such as satellite, cable, and digital video recorders. But then again, there is always someone deciding what will stream and when, and people are used on asking “What is on TV?” With online TV (or Internet TV) there is no need for something like this… Why? Because there is literally millions of video
choices at your finger tips. Of course, with such quantity, quality varies. But no need to sweat. There is a fantastic amount of top quality content online, however, the biggest challenge is to know where to search for it.
Online TV paradigm is anytime, anyplace and at all times, and because of it, there is new question popping up – “What do you wanna watch ?!” Of course, you can`t expect to find everything on online TV, at least not legally. And why is that ? It is because that some shows sell exclusive right to TV stations and therefore only them are entitled to stream that event… Some of those are Oscars, Super bowl, NBA finals etc… But then again, when you go and compare online TV with traditional TV stream, hmm…no need to explain further…you got the point. I hope

Ok, I presume that you would like to know how much that costs. And just let we say – not much, but it depends. It depends on your choice. Do you wanna watch only free online TV or do you have bigger appetites ? Let us see…
Cable TV can run $60 per month, where online TV ONLY has the cost of Internet connection… But what are the downsides of Internet or online TV ? With online TV,
most of the episodes appear online a day later, reducing the “in-the-know” feeling. Also, an occasional major live event may not be legally online.
If you can handle the downsides, the upsides are far more reaching.

Online TV offers savings, extensive available on-demand content, and the choice to watch what you want, whenever you want it. It is the future, and it’s available today.
And do not forget one fact - you can either watch TV on your computer, or you can always connect it to your 150? plasma :)  In next few days, I will try different software, both commercial and free, and try too summarize what is good and why. Watch TV over Internet, watch TV on Internet or watching live tv online – just try to watch, you won`t be sorry.

Hi,

When it comes to watching TV online or video,  looks like United States  just can`t get enough. A survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project has discovered that virtually 75 % of the population in US use Internet to watch online content. We have been using Internet to watch one or more of the following: video clips, TV shows, movies and educational videos.

The survey conducted by phone of 1200  adults discovered that 73% use the web for watching funny videos, tv shows, movies and educational stuff. Most of them  doing this are the 18-29 age range. The survey also revealed  how much online tv viewing has been rising since 2007. Watching funny videos grew from 31% to 50% of Internet users. Similarly, and the biggest gainers were not surprisingly tv shows and movies with viewer numbers rising to 32%. Also, streaming of political videos rised  30% and educational video watching grew by 16%. Growth of people who watch TV over Internet is arround 15 % yearly.

“The spread of broadband, the increased use of social networks and status update sites like Facebook and Twitter, the popularity of video-sharing sites like YouTube,  and the embrace of video features by untold numbers of websites, have all contributed to the surge in online video watching.

The survey showed what most of us already know, that professional premium content is getting more popular. The study found that 8% of internet video watchers have connected their pc to the tv set in order to watch online video, and 10% of online video watchers have paid to watch or download a video. Internet users are also uploading far more video, we found out that 14% of Internet users have uploaded a video to YouTube or similar sites.  This is 100 % more than 2 years ago…

It also seems that having a movie on the hard drive is not a major factor for most people, the survey revealed that viewers prefer streaming movies and TV shows from websites or services like Netflix. Over 60% of Internet users watch online TV shows and movies from streaming sites, but only a quarter (23%) bother to download. To be honest, great news for Movie Industry.

I can`t wait what results will be next year, beacuse this is 2010.  No.1 Boom …Long live Online TV streaming :)

thx

What is Internet TV ?!

Hello everyone,

So, let we start simple.

Internet TV (otherwise known as Internet TV, or Online TV) is TV service distributed via the Internet connection using iptv protocol . It has become very popular during the 21st century with services such as Hulu in the USA, and Demand Five n the UK.

Internet TV allows the users to choose the program or the TV show they want to watch from an archive of programs or from a channel directory. The two forms of viewing Internet TV  are streaming the content directly to a media player (mostly LiveTV broadcast) or simply downloading the program to the user’s computer (previosly uploaded content). With the “TV on Demand” market growing, these on-demand websites or applications are a must have for major television broadcasters. Fo

Most providers of the service provide several different formats and quality of service controls  so that the service can be viewed on many different devices. Some services now offer a HD service along side their SD, streaming is the same but offers the quality of HD to the device being used, as long as it is using a High Definiton  screen.

Access to internet TV streaming is a relatively simple process. Using an at least DSL connection, something which is common in many homes in the developed world, the user simply enters their chosen website address. For example, bbc.co.uk/iplayer . If the user has no select preference of streaming service, the name of a chosen television programme can be inserted into a search engine followed by a phrase such as “watch live TV online” or “online TV watching“. Accessing television on the internet has never been so simple, due to this usability of streaming services which have been  improved to maintain the simplicity of the process. Upon selection of a channel  and website, the user may have to wait a few seconds  to allow their chosen channel  to stream. A process called buffering allows the channel  to run in one smooth showing as opposed to stopping and starting to allow the channel to stream pc tv.
